After time for lunch, explore an important chapter of Cambodia's recent history at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, formerly the S-21 detention centre during the Khmer Rouge period.

Continue to the Choeung Ek Genocidal Centre, commonly known as the Killing Fields. Your guide will explain this difficult period with sensitivity and historical context.

Return to the city in the late afternoon.

To end the day on a more peaceful note, board a comfortable boat for a sunset cruise along the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers.

Overnight in Phnom Penh

After breakfast, leave Phnom Penh and travel east toward the highlands of Mondulkiri.

Continue to Kampong Cham, a pleasant provincial town located along the Mekong River.

Continue through eastern Cambodia, passing rubber plantations, farming communities and gradually changing landscapes.

As you approach Mondulkiri, flat agricultural land gives way to cooler hills, pine trees, rolling grasslands and forest.

Arrive in Sen Monorom, capital of Mondulkiri Province, and check into your hotel.

Overnight in Mondulkiri

Today offers one of the journey's most memorable wildlife experiences.

After breakfast, travel into the forest surrounding Sen Monorom for an ethical elephant experience focused on observation, conservation and animal welfare.

Meet the elephants and learn about their individual histories and the conservation work being carried out to protect them.

Walk beside the elephants through the forest and observe their natural behaviour as they forage and explore their surroundings.

There is no elephant riding.

During the afternoon, continue through the forest toward a waterfall.

Depending on local conditions and the elephants' natural behaviour, observe them enjoying the water while guests may also have an opportunity to swim and cool down.

After breakfast, leave the forested hills of Mondulkiri and travel toward the Mekong River.

Arrive in Kratie, a relaxed riverside town that still retains much of its traditional and colonial character.

Continue north along the Mekong River to one of Cambodia's most important wildlife areas.

Board a local boat for a gentle cruise in search of the endangered Irrawaddy dolphins.

Later, return toward Kratie and cross the Mekong by local ferry to Koh Trong Island.

Explore the archaeological complex and visit its most impressive monument, Prasat Thom, a dramatic seven-tiered pyramid rising above the surrounding forest.

Walk through ancient sanctuaries, gateways and forest paths while learning about the ambitious rulers who transformed this remote location into an important royal centre.

The relatively small number of visitors makes Koh Ker one of the most atmospheric archaeological experiences in Cambodia.

After the visit, continue by private vehicle to Siem Reap.

Continue to the impressive Reclining Buddha, an important pilgrimage site for Cambodian Buddhists.
