Discover Cambodia together on a family adventure designed to keep both adults and younger travellers engaged. This 12-day journey combines the legendary temples of Angkor with jungle exploration, countryside experiences, Khmer cooking, waterfalls, cultural activities, a Mekong sunset cruise and a relaxing tropical island escape. Rather than filling every day with sightseeing, the programme maintains a comfortable family pace. Shorter touring periods, swimming breaks, free afternoons and interactive experiences give children and teenagers time to enjoy the journey without becoming overwhelmed. |
DAY 1 – WELCOME TO SIEM REAP
Welcome to Cambodia!
Upon arrival at Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport, your local English-speaking guide welcomes the family and assists with the transfer by private air-conditioned vehicle to your hotel.
Check into a comfortable family-friendly hotel with a swimming pool and take some time to recover from your international journey. Nothing demanding is scheduled today, allowing everyone to settle into the new time zone at their own pace.
In the late afternoon or early evening, head out for your first introduction to Siem Reap. Take a leisurely walk around town or enjoy your family's first ride aboard Cambodia's famous tuk-tuk.
Tonight, gather for a welcome dinner at a family-friendly local restaurant. Your guide can introduce several approachable Cambodian dishes, making this a gentle introduction to Khmer cuisine.
Family Experience: First Cambodian tuk-tuk ride
Overnight: Siem Reap
DAY 2 – ANGKOR WAT FAMILY DISCOVERY & ANGKOR THOM
After breakfast, set out early for the magnificent Angkor Archaeological Park while the temperature is still comfortable.
Begin with Cambodia's most celebrated monument, Angkor Wat. Instead of a lengthy historical lecture, the visit is transformed into an interactive family exploration. Children and teenagers can search for mythical creatures, apsara dancers, hidden carvings and interesting details while your guide brings the Khmer Empire to life through stories and legends.
Continue to the ancient walled city of Angkor Thom, entering through one of its impressive gateways.
At the centre stands Bayon Temple, famous for its enormous and mysterious smiling stone faces. Explore the temple together before continuing to the Terrace of the Elephants, once used for royal ceremonies.
By early afternoon, return to Siem Reap.
The rest of the day is deliberately free. Have lunch, cool down in the hotel swimming pool or simply relax after the morning's temple exploration.
Family Experiences: Angkor treasure hunt, photography challenge, Bayon's giant faces and swimming-pool time
Overnight: Siem Reap
DAY 3 – JUNGLE TEMPLES, COUNTRYSIDE ADVENTURE & PHARE CIRCUS
This morning, return to Angkor for a completely different temple experience.
Explore atmospheric Ta Prohm, where enormous tree roots twist around ancient doorways and stone walls. Its jungle setting makes it one of Angkor's most exciting temples for younger travellers.
Continue to a quieter temple where the family has more space to explore without rushing.
Depending on the children's ages and energy levels, continue with a gentle countryside cycling experience or travel by tuk-tuk through villages surrounding the Angkor area.
See rice fields, traditional houses and everyday rural life before returning to Siem Reap.
The afternoon is free for swimming and relaxation.
This evening, enjoy one of Siem Reap's most entertaining family experiences: Phare, The Cambodian Circus. Acrobatics, theatre, music, dance and Cambodian storytelling come together in a high-energy performance suitable for families. The original itinerary specifically includes this performance as an interactive experience particularly appealing to children.
Family Experiences: Jungle temple exploration, countryside discovery and Cambodian circus
Overnight: Siem Reap
DAY 4 – CAMBODIAN VILLAGE & FAMILY COOKING EXPERIENCE
Today is about participating rather than simply sightseeing.
Travel into the countryside with your cooking instructor and stop at a colourful local market. Children can discover unfamiliar tropical fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices while learning how Cambodian families shop for their daily meals.
Continue to a peaceful village cooking venue.
Parents and children work together to prepare a selection of simple Cambodian dishes. Depending on the season and cooking programme, these might include fresh spring rolls, Khmer curry, amok, sticky rice or a traditional dessert.
After cooking, sit down together and enjoy the meal you have prepared.
The experience may also include a walk through a family garden, small farm or village, providing an opportunity to learn where local ingredients come from and how Cambodian families live outside the cities.
Return to Siem Reap after lunch.
The remainder of the afternoon is free for the swimming pool, shopping or relaxation.
Family Experiences: Local market challenge, hands-on cooking, village encounter and Cambodian food discovery
Overnight: Siem Reap
DAY 5 – PHNOM KULEN WATERFALL & NATURE ADVENTURE
Leave the temples behind today and travel north of Siem Reap to the forested landscape of Phnom Kulen.
Considered one of Cambodia's most sacred mountains, Phnom Kulen combines history, religion and nature.
Explore selected forest paths and discover ancient carvings associated with the mountain's long history. Visit the hilltop pagoda and observe local Cambodian pilgrims before continuing towards the waterfall.
Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant or a picnic-style meal surrounded by nature.
There is time to relax around the waterfall and, when water and safety conditions are suitable, enjoy a refreshing swim.
The emphasis today is on an easy-going family nature experience rather than strenuous trekking.
Return to Siem Reap during the afternoon and enjoy a relaxing final evening in town.
Family Experiences: Forest exploration, waterfall swimming, picnic or local lunch and easy nature adventure
Overnight: Siem Reap
DAY 6 – SIEM REAP TO PHNOM PENH & MEKONG SUNSET CRUISE
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the short flight to Phnom Penh. Using a domestic flight avoids a long road journey and keeps the programme more comfortable for families, as intended in the original itinerary.
Upon arrival, meet your local guide and transfer to your hotel.
Enjoy lunch and some free time before setting out later in the afternoon for a gentle introduction to Cambodia's capital.
Explore the lively riverside area and selected landmarks before boarding a boat for a relaxing sunset cruise.
Sail around the confluence of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers while Phnom Penh's skyline gradually lights up for the evening.
Return to the hotel after the cruise.
Family Experiences: Domestic flight, Phnom Penh riverside and Mekong sunset cruise
Overnight: Phnom Penh
DAY 7 – ROYAL PHNOM PENH & INTERACTIVE CULTURAL EXPERIENCE
After breakfast, visit the beautiful Royal Palace complex and Silver Pagoda, discovering Cambodia's royal traditions and architecture.
Rather than spending the entire day visiting monuments, continue to a colourful local market where the family can explore Cambodian snacks, tropical fruits, souvenirs and everyday products.
The afternoon introduces another hands-on element to the journey.
Depending on the children's ages and interests, choose an interactive activity such as a Khmer dance workshop, pottery or handicraft class, Cambodian snack-tasting experience or visit to an arts or community organisation.
For families travelling with older teenagers, an age-appropriate introduction to Cambodia's modern history can be arranged. As the source itinerary recommends, visits dealing with the Khmer Rouge period should remain optional rather than being automatically included for families with younger children.
Finish the day with dinner at a welcoming Cambodian restaurant.
Family Experiences: Royal Palace, local market, Cambodian crafts and cultural participation
Overnight: Phnom Penh
DAY 8 – PHNOM PENH TO CAMBODIA'S TROPICAL ISLANDS
After breakfast, leave the capital and travel south towards Cambodia's tropical coastline.
Travel by private air-conditioned vehicle using the expressway before connecting with a scheduled speedboat to your selected island resort.
For a more adventurous family beach experience, Koh Rong offers beautiful beaches and plenty of activities. Families seeking a quieter upscale resort experience may instead choose Koh Russey or another suitable private-island property, an alternative also provided in the original programme.
Upon arrival, check into your beach resort.
There is no further sightseeing today.
Change into your swimwear, head to the beach, enjoy the swimming pool or simply relax beneath the tropical palms.
Family Experiences: Coastal journey, speedboat adventure, white-sand beach and first island swim
Overnight: Cambodian island resort
DAY 9 – TROPICAL ISLAND FAMILY DAY
Wake up beside the sea with an entire day to enjoy exactly as your family wishes.
There is deliberately no scheduled sightseeing today.
Children can swim, play beach games or build sandcastles, while teenagers might enjoy paddleboarding, kayaking or other available water activities.
Depending on the chosen resort, younger children may join supervised kids' activities while parents enjoy some quiet time or a spa treatment.
Families wanting more adventure can arrange snorkelling or other resort-based activities.
Or simply find your favourite spot on the beach and spend the day together.
Suggested Activities: Swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, beach games, snorkelling, kids' club or spa
Overnight: Cambodian island resort
DAY 10 – FAMILY BOAT ADVENTURE & SNORKELLING
After breakfast, head out on the water for a half-day family boat adventure.
Cruise towards suitable snorkelling locations and quieter beaches around the islands. The precise programme remains flexible because sea and weather conditions determine the safest and most enjoyable locations each day.
Teenagers and confident swimmers can enjoy supervised snorkelling and look for tropical fish beneath the clear water.
Younger children can use appropriate flotation equipment, play in shallow water or remain close to the boat and beach with their parents.
Depending on conditions and the selected excursion, kayaking or a simple beach picnic can also be incorporated.
Return to the resort with the afternoon completely free.
Swim, relax or simply enjoy the tropical surroundings before watching another beautiful Cambodian sunset.
Family Experiences: Boat adventure, snorkelling, tropical fish, secluded beaches and island sunset
Overnight: Cambodian island resort
DAY 11 – FREE DAY ON THE BEACH & FAMILY FAREWELL DINNER
Your final full day in Cambodia has no fixed touring programme.
Sleep late and enjoy a leisurely breakfast before choosing how you would like to spend the day.
Swim together, join resort activities, walk along the beach, try water sports or simply enjoy a final day beneath the tropical sun.
This unstructured day gives everyone time to relax after the cultural and adventurous parts of the journey.
As evening approaches, gather for a special family farewell dinner beside the beach.
Enjoy the sound of the sea and reflect on your journey from the ancient temples of Angkor to Cambodia's capital and tropical islands.
Family Experiences: Free beach day, family relaxation and farewell dinner by the sea
Overnight: Cambodian island resort
DAY 12 – ISLAND – MAINLAND – DEPARTURE
Enjoy a final breakfast overlooking the tropical surroundings.
Depending on your flight schedule, transfer by speedboat back to the mainland and continue by private air-conditioned vehicle towards Phnom Penh for your onward international journey.
Your Family Escape Cambodia comes to an end with wonderful memories of ancient temples, tuk-tuks, Cambodian villages, cooking together, waterfalls, river cruising and tropical island adventures.
Important: For an early international departure, I strongly recommend adding one final night in Phnom Penh rather than relying on an island boat connection and international flight on the same day. This also follows the operational caution in the original itinerary.
